Sax From Scratch

Over the past 10 years I have been delivering a range of saxophone tuition courses as part of the continuing education department at the Stables Theatre in Milton Keynes, one of the premier theatres for live music in the country.

My beginners ‘Sax from Scratch’ workshops gives you the perfect opportunity to enjoy an absolute beginners workshop with a saxophone and all the equipment you need provided. The workshop begins with everyone getting to know their instrument, breathing exercises and gradually building to achieve a sound. A basic scale soon follows and before you know it, we’ll be playing some simple melodies!

Refresher and Improver workshops are designed to follow on building core skills and playing popular melodies. The Improvers course offers the opportunity for those who have their own sax and are looking for a monthly structured and supportive activity.

The Study groups, consist of students who have past through the earleir workshops and continuing to enjoy playing togehter and taking live music out into the community, performing at local events, residential homes and charity fund raisers!

All learning is conducted in small groups of up to 8 participants, with the emphasis on having fun and learning together. All workshops are 3 hour events.

What an awesome day! I’m feeling very special and blessed.

My day started with a belated birthday surprise from Kavi, Mita and the munchkins. something I’ve wanted to do for a very, very long time. They picked me up this morning and I was driven up to the Attenborough Arts Centre to lush sounds of Baker Street and other tunes playing on the car stereo for… wait for it… a lesson in learning to play the “Saxophone from Scratch” in one day. Whoop! Whoop!

Over the course of the day, Ian Hill an excellent teacher took me from never having ever played a note to holding no less than 5 tunes that were at very least passably recognisable, I could play 2 octaves, got a good foundation in music theory…. and I got to look way too cool for school holding a Saxamaphone! Move over Lisa Simpson.

… Ohh…did I tell you? I learned to play the Saxophone today.

Ian, firstly can I say that I was blown away (sorry for the pun) by the Sax from Scratch morning at the Stables on sat – it was great and you did an excellent job.

I was so inspired that I went home and found the tenor sax that has been hiding in the loft for 25 years – due to me being a little scared of actually trying to play it and now I would like to enquire about lessons……
